Cape Town winters bring more than rain. In Bonteheuwel, our Bontekids reading program is a sanctuary for young minds. Children gather three times a week to read aloud, discover new stories, and share a nourishing meal. But our sessions take place on an open patio (stoep)—and when the rain comes, as it often does in winter, our mission pauses.
We do not have a roof over their learning.
Our commitment to literacy, nutrition, and community does not waver. But without a safe, sheltered space, we are unable to give children what they need most: consistency. The kind of consistency that builds confidence, improves school outcomes, and changes lives.
We need a simple but critical structure. A covered, wind-protected area where children can continue to read, engage, and grow—regardless of the season. This is not a luxury. It is the foundation of educational dignity in a community where every opportunity matters.
We are actively seeking partnerships and support from:
Private donors and philanthropists
Businesses looking to make meaningful social investments
Government or municipal stakeholders with a shared vision for youth development
Whether it is a contribution of funds, materials, or influence—we invite you to be part of this solution.
When a child reads, they imagine more. When a child shows up every week to be seen, taught, and fed, they build resilience. When a community invests in literacy, it is investing in its future.
As one of our volunteers shared, “All we need is a roof. The rest is already here—hope, determination, and the belief that something better is possible.”
Support our efforts to build a safe learning space. Help ensure that no child’s education is dependent on weather. Be part of a legacy of change in the Cape Flats.
