Thanks to the Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Outreach Programme, an unforgettable learning experience arrived right at our doorstep — showing that access to knowledge doesn't need to be confined to buildings or city centres.
The initiative, titled “Taking the Museum to the People,” transformed our stoep (patio) into a dynamic learning space. Children in their bold yellow Bontekids T-shirts sat wide-eyed as bones, fossils, cultural artefacts, and preserved animals were gently unpacked in front of them. What would usually be displayed behind glass was suddenly real, touchable and deeply engaging.
From a penguin specimen to ancient ammonites, every object sparked questions and inspired stories. The Iziko facilitator shared each item with energy and care, helping science, culture, and conservation come alive in a way the children will never forget. A beading activity, simple on the surface, quietly taught patience, creativity and cultural appreciation.
This was more than just a lesson. It was a moment of inclusion, where children who may never have stepped into a museum were given the same chance to wonder, explore, and learn.
We are incredibly grateful to Iziko for their dedication to creating meaningful connections between education and community. With the right partners, we can continue to open new worlds to our children — right here in Bonteheuwel.
If you believe in this kind of access and opportunity, we welcome your support through donations or volunteering.
